Motorola presently appears to re-establish history with the Edge S. Motorola Edge S is a new smartphone with the latest chip and aggressive low pricing. It is powered by the new Snapdragon 870 SoC with full 5G capability starting at just Rs 23,000! As Indian buyers seek more price to performance ratio this may be a killer deal for them.

The Edge S is utilizing a Snapdragon 870 chipset, which regardless of being new, isn't the best chip Qualcomm makes. Look carefully you will see an overclocked Snapdragon 865+ chipset with a higher 3.2GHz clock speed. Nonetheless, there are no apps and games of Android that can stall the Snapdragon 865 yet. Even all the heavy games run on maximum graphics and the highest frame rates possible on the snapdragon 865. Hence, overclocked Snapdragon 865 which is Snapdragon 870 in the Edge S will flow through the tasks you throw at it. The Edge S will unquestionably be enough even for heavy gaming as well as multitasking.

Unlike Poco F1 and other manufacturers who use heavy and bloated Android skins like MIUI and Realme UI, the Motorola Edge S will come with a close stock Android UI with just the important features added and no extra bloatware. Anybody with a little knowledge about smartphones knows that stock Android is far smoother and snappier than the heavy android skins and also uses fewer smartphone resources and therefore, will offer efficient performance.

This superior performance also comes with some compromises. You are only getting a 90Hz refresh rate display which is an IPS LCD panel, which isn’t as good as an AMOLED panel in terms of color reproduction, contrast ratios, and brightness. The 5000mAh battery will provide a higher screen on time due to the more efficient Snapdragon 870 chip but it comes with a 20W charger which is sub-par compared to the 65W-120W chargers we are seeing in the new smartphones. Moreover, the plastic body of the Edge S isn't going to feel premium.

Motorola Edge S is currently launched in China only and has three variants.

  2. 6GB RAM and 128GB storage >> Price - CNY 2399(approximately Rs 27,000 and 370$)
  3. 8GB RAM and 256GB storage >> Price - CNY 2799(approximately Rs 31,500 and 430$)
Motorola is yet to comment on the Edge S global launch. Looking at the past, it seems that Motorola could be planning their launch just when OnePlus announces its OnePlus 9 series this year. Rumour suggests that there will be an affordable OnePlus 9E launching this year with the Snapdragon 870 SoC.
